Abstract

This monograph analyzes the monasteries of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge as a regional system of religious, cultural, and symbolic space within the historical landscape of Southeast Europe. Integrating architectural analysis, visual documentation, and historical interpretation, the study examines monasteries not only as artistic and spiritual monuments, but as institutions embedded in long-term processes of cultural continuity, social organization, and political transformation.

By combining extensive visual material with archival and comparative analysis, the book situates the Ovčar-Kablar monastic complex within broader patterns of Orthodox monasticism, heritage formation, and cultural policy across the Balkans. Particular attention is given to the role of monasteries as mediators between local communities, religious traditions, and state institutions from the medieval period to the modern era.

The study conceptualizes monastic heritage as a dynamic cultural system shaped by historical change, institutional frameworks, and symbolic practices.
