Abstract
This monograph examines the cultural heritage of the Čačak region through a long-term perspective spanning more than 7,000 years, from prehistory to the present. Combining approaches from cultural history, archaeology, art history, and museum studies, it analyzes how material culture reflects broader processes of social transformation and political change.
Structured chronologically, the study traces key historical layers—from Neolithic settlements and classical antiquity to medieval monastic networks, Ottoman-period transformations, and the emergence of modern urban forms in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Particular emphasis is placed on sacred architecture, the Ovčar–Kablar monastic landscape, and the role of cultural heritage in the construction of regional identity.
The monograph advances the interpretation of Čačak as a microhistorical model for examining long-term cultural continuity, the formation of cultural landscapes, and the dynamics of modernization in Southeast Europe.
