Abstract
This richly illustrated monograph presents a comprehensive historical, architectural, and cultural study of the Church of the Holy Ascension of Christ in Čačak, one of the most important symbolic and urban landmarks of central Serbia. Combining archival research, archaeological evidence, architectural analysis, and art-historical interpretation, the book traces the multilayered transformation of the site from a medieval Orthodox monastery to an Ottoman mosque and back to a Christian church, reflecting broader political, religious, and urban changes in Southeast Europe.
The study examines the church as a focal point of urban development, demonstrating how sacred space functioned as a structural core around which the town of Čačak evolved from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Special attention is given to architectural phases, wall painting, iconostasis, treasury objects, and the relationship between religious institutions and civic life.
By integrating visual documentation with analytical interpretation, the monograph contributes to studies of religious heritage, urban history, and cultural continuity in Southeast Europe.
