Abstract
This monograph presents a comparative analysis of the modernization processes of two medium-sized Balkan cities – Čačak in Serbia and Blagoevgrad in Bulgaria – between 1944 and 1989, within the broader context of socialist transformation in Southeast Europe. Grounded in political, social, and urban history, the study examines how industrialization, infrastructure development, demographic change, and local governance shaped urban development.
Combining quantitative and qualitative sources – including archival records, statistical data, and urban morphology – the book explores the relationship between state-led modernization strategies, local elite agency, and socio-economic constraints in socialist Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. The comparative approach highlights divergent developmental trajectories within different socialist systems.
The study contributes to urban history, political culture, and regional modernization studies, demonstrating the value of comparative micro-urban analysis for understanding structural processes in twentieth-century European history.
